New Cat Food For Our Furry Friends- SquarePet VFS POWERCAT

We love our furry feline friends and here at the Talbert Zoo, Baby, Gally and Luna are family.  It’s important that our cats live long, happy and healthy lives. Regular vet visits and proper nutrition will ensure that they will remain in our family for a long time. When I was asked to review a new nutritious cat food designed by a veterinarian I eagerly said, “yes.”

VFS® POWERCAT is obligate carnivore nutrition specifically formulated to match the needs of the unique feline metabolism. High meat-based protein paired with ultra-low carbohydrates (less than 8% dietary starch) provide the carnivorous amino acids required by hypercarnivores to help promote strong muscles and a lean and fit body condition. VFS POWERCAT is ideal for all life stages, including growing kittens and pregnant and lactating females (and even Ferrets!).

Ever since we brought home a new kitten in July, feeding time has become more complicated.  Baby and Gally have sensitive stomachs and are on a kibble that addresses that issue. Our kitten has to eat a kitten formula.  When we feed the three felines together Luna was eating the adult cat food and the other two favored the kitten food.  Our little kitten was nearly choking on the larger kibble in the adult food and Gally started throwing up more often.  I couldn’t find a kibble that was safe to feed to adult cats and kittens until I was introduced to VFS® POWERCAT.

The kibble is small to prevent kittens from choking and the nutrition is balanced for both adult and younger cats. “Cats are obligate carnivores requiring higher amounts of protein. As such they have an innate dietary preference to obtain their calories from proteins and fats over that of carbohydrates.

This unique feline metabolism calls for higher amounts of nutrients such as:

PROTEIN ARGININE  TAURINE METHIONINE CYSTINE ARICHIDONIC ACID NIACIN VITAMIN A
POWERCAT accounts for these carnivorous needs and helps to support strong healthy muscles and a healthy body weight making it a perfect choice for any cat.

Or for any cats prone to late night purring and biscuit-making,” mysquarepet.com/powercat.

Square Pet is a family owned and operated company. Peter Atkins and his two sons, Travis (DVM) and Tyler combined their talents and expertise to create a pet food company that offers high-quality, responsibly sourced ingredients formulated to give our furry family members the optimal nutrition to live long, happy lives.

Peter Atkins

After receiving both his undergraduate degree and master’s degree from Texas A&M, Peter Atkins (father of Travis and Tyler) went to work for Ralston-Purina. In the early 1990s, he co-founded Natura Pet Products. Peter helped pioneer pet food industry changing innovations including the use of fresh meats, fruits and vegetables in dry pet food formulas, the use of probiotics and prebiotics, the use of chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine, novel protein formulas using exotic meat sources including kangaroo and ostrich, and created the first true limited ingredient diet. Most notably, Peter created the very first high-meat, low-carbohydrate, dry pet food, made without grains.

Peter’s decades-long career in the pet food industry revolved around his belief in creating quality pet foods with an emphasis on health and natural ingredients. After taking a hiatus from the pet food industry, Peter and his wife, Nancy, decided to join forces with their sons to once again develop innovative pet foods that elevate the overall quality of the industry.

Travis Atkins, DVM
Travis and his brother grew up in an unusually pet food-focused home — from crayon drawings of pet food brand logos as youngsters to working in feed stores, manufacturing plants, and distribution warehouses as teenagers.

After graduating from the University of California-Davis, Travis started a pet food distribution business that catered to independent pet stores. Influences from these altruistic pet retailers paired with his childhood background contributed to him pursuing a career in veterinary medicine.

He returned to University of California-Davis and earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree. Travis worked as a family practice and emergency medicine veterinarian. He is also a member of the American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition.

Travis lives in Austin, Texas with his wife Sarah, son Nolan, daughter Gretchen and an assortment of four-legged kids.

Tyler Atkins
Tyler grew up watching his father work for Purina, and then watched him start Natura. His father’s mission to revolutionize and improve the pet food industry left a lasting impression on Tyler.

Tyler graduated from California State University Fresno where he majored in Business Administration Marketing. While attending college, he met his wife Michelle, who along with their 4 boys, Andrew, Pierce, Peyton and Austin, have always been his champions for success.

Throughout his professional sales and training experiences, Tyler never forgot his foundation — caring for animals. So, when the opportunity came to join forces with his dad and brother in the pet nutrition industry, he jumped at the chance.

Before taking on the sales and marketing leadership role for SquarePet, Tyler enjoyed many highly successful years in sales — most notably, a 13-year award winning career in the medical device industry. Tyler brings his extensive sales experience and knowledge to SquarePet as a vital component to the family-owned business.” www.mysquarepet.com/about/

I fed little Luna first (4 1/2 mos). When she saw and smelled the bag she got so excited and I thought she was going to tear into it. She weighs close to 5lbs so I measured out a little under 1/4 c. as recommended. Luna gobbled it up and purred like she hadn’t eaten in days. PowerCat is Luna approved.

Next I fed Gally (3 years).  Gally is a timid cat and prefers to eat alone. I fed her upstairs in a bedroom.  After sniffing the bag she was ready to try the new cat food. She ate like a champion. A few hours later her bowl was empty. Gally has only eaten PowerCat and her canned food since then and hasn’t thrown up. PowerCat has the right nutritional and ingredient balance for the most sensitive stomachs.

When I showed Baby (our beautiful and sassy black cat, 5 years)  the new cat food she was hesitant to approach the bag at first. I finally got her to sniff the bag before shoving a bowl of the new kibble under her nose. She sniffed the bowl and walked away. I was concerned that maybe she didn’t like the food so I moved the bowl over to the regular feeding area for our cats. A couple of hours later I witnessed Baby eat the PowerCat food. This cat food even pleases the most stubborn and sassy cats.

Now I can  put their kibble out without having to worry about my cats eating the wrong food.  Gally stopped throwing up and Luna stopped choking on her kibble. I also know that they are getting the best nutrition possible.  You can purchase VFS® POWERCAT™ by SquarePet at mysquarepet.com, Chewy, Amazon, and in select pet retailers throughout the country.

*I received a 4.4lb bag of VFS® POWERCAT™ Turkey & Chicken for Cats by SquarePet in exchange for this review. All opinions are accurate and completely my own.
