Autism is a complex disorder. This means that it is hard to describe exactly what autism is. What we do know, however, is that in the United States alone there are over 400,000 individuals with the disorder.
There are many different types of autism, and they can come in many different forms. We have found over the years that the first type of autism is typically inherited from one or both parents.
Genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis are examples of this condition. With Cystic Fibrosis, people are born with a defective gene that causes their immune system to produce an excess of mucus.
The most important difference between these two conditions is that cystic fibrosis is actually treatable. The challenge with autism is that the condition is in the neurological cortex and the research to determine a cure is ongoing.
As we look at the autism spectrum disorder, we are going to list some of the more common autism conditions and disorders. Autism is believed to be a part of autism spectrum disorder. In other words, if a child has three different types of autism then he or she likely has the autism spectrum disorder as well.
The four main types of autism are non-verbal developmental disorders (otherwise known as autism), restricted development (one or more developmental delays) and sensory integration disorders. A person may have one or more of these conditions. The most common of these sensory integration disorders is called Fragile X syndrome.
The other main type of autism spectrum disorder is known as pervasive developmental disorder. In children with this condition, they are able to learn, but they are unable to function normally in the world. Examples of this condition include the following:
Thethree types of autism co-occur with other types of autism as well as some other co-morbid disorders. For example, babies that are born with structural abnormalities, infections, or neurologic problems often show autism signs and symptoms.
How do you know if something is a red flag? By asking around you will find out what signs and symptoms your child has. Children who do not seem to learn as well as other children will most likely have the red flag autism and vice versa.
How long does it take for the autism to manifest itself? Most children will exhibit the same symptoms within the first two years of life. After this time, children’s symptoms will change and continue to change as they mature.
Knowing these signs and symptoms will be of great help to parents. The first thing that you want to do is make sure that your child is not premature. We do not want our kids to be born prematurely due to the lack of knowledge.
You also want to make sure that your child is not underweight or overweight. Obesity in children has been linked to a higher risk of having autism in adults. Behavior problems and anger are also on the list of conditions that should raise a red flag.
