Florida Vacation Part Two

Now that my computer is working again I am going to try to get caught up with our Florida vacation.  It is Wednesday night as I type this but I am going to try to recall the events of Monday. Hopefully, my memory will not fail me. On Monday the forecast called for rain and clouds in the morning so we decided to skip the beach and head down to Sarasota to visit the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium. The Mote Aquarium opened in 1980 to showcase ground-breaking marine research…

#WordlessWednesday with #linky on a Tuesday – Florida Vacation

Wordless Wednesday is live on thehealthymoms.net and talbertzoo.com. Link up to your Wordless Wednesday post. This is going to be a not so Wordless Wednesday today.  We are on vacation in Florida this week and I promised all my readers that I would update Talbert Zoo each day with our adventures. I was able to write my Florida Vacation Part One post. But, last night my computer decided it didn’t want to work correctly. I turned it on and it was stuck on an update. I didn’t want to stay…

Florida Vacation Part One

We left for sunny Florida on Friday afternoon when the kids got out of school.  The first leg of the trip went fairly well and we made it to Louisville, KY around midnight. After spending the night at a hotel we left Louisville at 8am Saturday morning. The drive on Saturday was beautiful. We enjoyed watching the seasons change from winter to spring the further south we got.  The trees went from barron to full leaves by the time we got down to Georgia.  A couple of traffic jams due…

South for Spring Break the Countdown is On!

When I was a kid growing up in Wisconsin, every single spring break we piled in our van and drove down to Bradenton, Florida. In the 1980’s we had brown full sized van which sat eight. My parents would be up front with my Dad behind the wheel. The middle of the van had two captain’s chairs. And the back had a bench seat which sat four. As the youngest of five children, I always sat in the back for the ride down to Florida. This was before car seats,…

Arizona Vacation Part Five

The Grandest Adventure of Them All! Yesterday we visited the Grand Canyon National Park. The kids have very short attention spans and it doesn’t take long for them to get bored so we stayed for only a couple of hours.  The Grand Canyon was formed two billion years ago when tectonic plates moved slowly across the earth’s surface. A plate carrying an island chain and the plate that became North America collided. The heat and pressure from this process changed the existing rock layers into dark metamorphic rock, which is…

Arizona Vacation Part Four

We are nearing the end of our family vacation.  The kids are tired and yesterday they did not behave.  Just about everything that you can  imagine could go wrong on a family vacation happened yesterday.  Chris decided we would go and see the painted dessert. He said it was on his bucket list, although I was not aware of this stop until yesterday.  We left sunny, warm Phoenix at 10 am and headed north east towards Flagstaff, Arizona.  The three hour drive up into higher elevation was very scenic.  Once…

Arizona Vacation Part Three

Yesterday we toured downtown Phoenix.  I was delighted when I saw all the beautiful displays marking major events in U.S history.  The people of Phoenix are proud to be Americans and proud of their history and heritage.  Arizona became a state in 1912. In 2012 they celebrated their centennial. Because today is our last day in Phoenix and I need time to pack up before we head to the Grand Canyon, I am just going to share some of our photos from yesterday.  I will try my best to explain…

Arizona Vacation Part Two

Exercise and family fitness is important to us.  So, yesterday we started out bright and early with a walk through the trail surrounding Papgago Park in Phoenix. Within the park stands beautiful sandstone buttes and Governor George Wiley Paul Hunt is entombed in  a white pyramid that is visible from almost any point in the park. Governor Hunt set a national record by being elected to the first, second, third, sixth, seventh, eighth and 10th term as Arizona’s governor. His wife, Helen, her parents, the J. W. Ellisons, and her…

Arizona Vacation Part One

It has been so refreshing to get away from the cold winds of Spokane and travel down to the beautiful state of Arizona.  The kids were troopers during the ride down here.  We had our DVD player running with Disney movies and Nick Jr. television shows for Monkey and Bear.  The older three kids had educational workbooks, books to read and their portable electronic devices to keep them occupied on the road.  I usually take a photo of the kids in the van when we go on a road trip,…
