Patron Saints of Nothing Book Review

While it’s impossible to give away spoilers for any of the Patron Saints of Nothing books, it is fair to say that most people won’t enjoy it. If nothing else, this novel will likely leave readers feeling more open about the Philippines and the difficulties that lay ahead for the protagonist, Jay. Unlike many novels, this novel tackles complex family dynamics and relationships across generations. The relationships between Jay and Grace are particularly complicated, as different people actively conceal information from each other. Language and cultural barriers place Jay at a disadvantage. Audrey, meanwhile, has trouble communicating with her grandmother and is unable to talk to her grandmother.

Ribay wrote four drafts of the first draft of Patron Saints of Nothing before finding an agent. Before being accepted by Penguin Random House, the manuscript was rejected by many editors. Ribay also wished to make the book accessible to Filipinos, and had Filipinos read it. Ultimately, this strategy paid off, and the book became a bestseller. For the next three years, Ribay is working on a sequel. While he was unable to tell her story in her first novel, she hopes readers will consider her novel.

The book’s plot revolves around Jay’s cousin’s murder. The family of Jun, a Filipino American college student, doesn’t want him to know what happened to him. They refuse to tell him the truth, but Jay is determined to discover what happened. Jun’s death leaves Jay with no choice but to investigate the case and find out more. His investigation leads him to the Philippines, where he finds many sides of his cousin to deal with. As a result, Patron Saints of Nothing is a masterpiece.
