A Not So Spring at the Zoo

May isn’t even half over yet and already it’s been a crazy month at the Talbert Zoo. We have birds living on our house and more birds in a bush less than ten feet from the house.  The weather in Chicago is not very spring like yet, with high temperatures barely reaching above 60 degrees.  We recently learned that Monkey’s medication is only making him behave worse in school. Goose’s new job has changed our regular routine, but for the better. Momma Robin Momma Robin has been sitting on her…

#WordlessWednesday with #linky on a Tuesday – Parrot’s New Puzzle

Wordless Wednesday is live on thehealthymoms.net and talbertzoo.com. Link up to your Wordless Wednesday post.Parrot loves puzzles. When he puts one together I have to frame it and hang it on his wall. Some day I will share photos of all the puzzles he has hanging in his room. It’s pretty impressive. Especially since he is only seven years old and he put all of them together on his own. Parrot got his first 1,000 piece puzzle from his Aunt and Uncle for First Holy Communion.  He’s put together a 750…

Preparing Children with Asperger’s for the Sacraments

I am sitting here listening to Christian music and thinking about the past weekend.  It’s been a while since I wrote here. For some reason, I just can not keep up with this blog the same way I do with my other one. I consider the Talbert Zoo my diary. Usually people update their diaries every single day, but my life is way too crazy for me to keep up with that pace. For now I will write a post here a couple of times a week. On Saturday Parrot…

Video Flashback – Parrot

Can you tell which country is missing? The kids were watching some of our old You Tube videos on our Fire TV this morning before school and they found this one from May of 2011.  Parrot is a Geography wiz. When he was three he knew all fifty states, where they were located and their names.  Today, he knows all the state capitols and most of the countries of the world. He just completed a world puzzle a few weeks ago. The puzzle pieces are in the shapes of the…

Home of the Crazies

Yes I love my kids and all their flaws. They are not perfect and neither am I.  Why do I call it the “home of the crazies?” Chris and I always joke around that we only have one normal kid, Little Bear. We tried and tried for a normal kid and by the time we got to number 5, finally we hit the jackpot! He is a sweet little boy without any social, emotional or mental problems.  Taking care of him is easy. But I also have to deal with…

A Change in Routine is Difficult for Kids with Asperger’s

It is the middle of the afternoon and the house is quiet.  I am soaking in the silence because I know that it will not be long and the peaceful rooms will be filled with yelling, screaming, crying, laughter and ruckus.   3 o’clock is my least favorite time of day. The noise starts every morning at 6am.  Parrot is usually the first one up.  He doesn’t understand that if other people are still sleeping then it is polite to be quiet so you don’t wake them. Aspie kids like…

Happy Birthday Parrot

I was so excited when I found out that I was having a boy after being a mother of two girls.  I imagined how my life would be different.  Sports, cars, trucks, and rough and rowdy play time was what I thought was going to be in my future.  I was not prepared for what God decided to bless me with on July 17, 2007. After five hours of labor without any pain medicine, we welcomed a healthy baby boy.  Right away I knew he was different than most newborns.  While…

Science with Parrot – Observing

One of Parrot’s special interests is science. His biggest ambition is to become a scientist who studies everything. Parrot is constantly reading and learning every single day and he has an ever growing collection of science books for kids. Today I am starting a new feature on The Talbert Zoo, titled “Science with Parrot.”  I promised my little boy that I would do more science experiments with him. So I will follow through and do an experiment on the weekends with him and write about it every Monday. The kids…

Parrot’s Fun Facts

Parrot reads a lot and his brain is a little sponge. Currently he is reading National Geographic Kids books. They are filled with facts about anything and everything from geography to animals, space and dinosaurs. Sometimes I will be sitting down answering e mails, fixing dinner or doing housework and Parrot will approach me with a fact from a book he has read or something he learned at school. Here are a couple of facts he told me about just yesterday. He was doing what looked like a simple version…

October Catch Up at The Zoo

This month I’ve let my Talbert Zoo readers down and I apologize. It’s been a few weeks since I last updated this blog.  October is nearly over and I still am not used to my family’s school schedule yet.  It’s been a busy, crazy couple of months. I’ll try my best to catch you all up on the happenings at The Talbert Zoo. Monkey and Bear October 2013 Goose is now a junior in high-school and sometimes I can not believe that she is that old.  School has been tough…
